Our Journey and Philosophy

Historic Stories came about as a result of a journey. The experience of living her own life moved Rachel from a young university graduate with the focus of a traditional historian; trained to research, document and rationalise the world’s big moments and movements, to a heritage practitioner with a passion for the smaller stories of the world - but the biggest stories in people’s lives!

Political movements, key events, governments and militaries, and influential people all shape the direction of the world. However, the way these are experienced by the everyday person often makes for the most powerful stories. By way of example, think of the Diary of Anne Frank - the story of a girl caught in one of the biggest political movements and armed engagements of the twentieth century. Her diary is the authentic voice of someone whose life is rendered completely unrecognisable by these historical facts - yet is not defined by them. This simple diary, documenting hopes and dreams, fears and hurts, the life still being lived in amongst the world's biggest story of its time, is still captivating readers in a way that no traditional history of World War Two ever could.

Historic Stories seeks to follow in these footsteps. We will leave it to others to document the world-altering stories, while we will instead focus on the extraordinary lives lived by ordinary people. Our heritage practice will be centred in authenticity and identity, always seeking to provide genuine representations of the people who have come before, and the people who continue to delight us with their stories.

Our aim is to always honour lives well lived. We look forward to the privilege of sharing your incredible stories, and invite you to become part of ours.
